Prescription Poison
What’s the only thing worse than a treatment that doesn’t work?
One that actually worsens your condition and makes it significantly harder to treat successfully in the future!
As crazy as that sounds, millions of Americans with osteoarthritis and joint issues are being treated with steroid injections that are not only ineffective but also incredibly harmful.
Doctors have prescribed steroid injections as a way to address inflammation, joint pain, and improve healing. We now know that steroid injections often do the opposite in the long term.
Picture your joint like a house. Your cartilage is the foundation on which that house is built. If you have a shaky foundation, your best approach is to make it stronger and more secure. The last thing you would want to do is make it weaker and less stable.
Steroid injections weaken the structural integrity of your joints by eating away at precious cartilage, making harder to stabilize and heal your joint in the future.
As this summary of a 2017 study reported in JAMA put it: “Everyone seems to be doing it, and no one is quite sure why … Researchers randomized 140 patients with knee osteoarthritis to steroid or saline injection every 12 weeks for 2 years. At each visit, they asked about pain and function. At baseline, 1 year, and 2 years in, they also got a knee MRI to examine the cartilage. Those who got steroid lost 0.16mm more cartilage than those who got saline.”
At the Osteopathic Center, we have successfully healed many patients with osteoarthritis and joint pain through a combination of stem cells and platelet rich plasma (PRP).
