A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTH
In the 1800s, there was a landmark battle in medicine. Louis Pasteur put forth the “germ theory.” But some of his contemporaries said he had it wrong, that the “inner terrain” was the more important thing. In other words, germs come and go; if your inner body is strong and healthy, germs will not harm you. Thus we should focus on creating health, not killing germs. Pasteur is said to have eventually soured on the germ theory — near the end of his life he reportedly said the inner terrain guys had gotten it right.
But Pasteur was a showman and had won the marketing battles of his day. His legacy is enormous. Pasteurization bears his name. He pioneered vaccination. Today, most of Western medicine is still operating on the Pasteur paradigm, still more focused on fighting germs rather than strengthening the immune system and other parts of the body’s machinery.
You might say that the inner terrain paradigm is carried on today in what is called “alternative medicine.” Let’s take a quick look at a few of the methods used by alt med doctors to encourage health:
Most people know that ultraviolet light is great at killing a wide range of microbes on a surface, but did you know that it can also be used as an alternative medicine to kill bacteria and viruses in your blood? It sounds a bit sci-fi, but it is really pretty basic technology. Your blood can be exposed to ultraviolet light in order to kill many forms of microbes. How is it done? We pull out a predetermined quantity of your blood and put it through a sterile, closed loop machine that irradiates your blood with ultraviolet light and then returns the blood back to your veins. Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UBI) appointments generally take between 45 and 90 minutes.
A related alternative medicine treatment is ozone therapy. In fact, UBI is often combined with ozone therapy. Oxygen kills bacteria and viruses. Ozone has 3 molecules of oxygen compared to the air we breathe which has 2. That third molecule gives ozone therapy its medicinal properties. At the Osteopathic Center, you can have ozone administered systemically via and IV, or applied to external wounds in a “gas bath.” This blood disinfection method is great for treating Lyme disease, cardiovascular disease, muscular degeneration, herpes, chronic hepatitis, diabetes, and even some auto-immune diseases.
Another alternative treatment that has been around for a long time is the use of IV therapy to treat common sicknesses like a cold or seasonal allergies — and even less common ailments like fibromyalgia. The IV serums are a combination of vitamins and essential nutrients that the body uses to repair itself. An intravenous delivery system bypasses the digestive system which may be impaired. IV therapies are custom tailored to your unique needs to give you the most benefit.
Surgeries and expensive drugs often are not the best way to treat chronic conditions. If you are looking for a more holistic approach to what ails you, look into what we can do for you at the Osteopathic Center.
