What is Osteopathic Manipulation?

Facilitate your natural healing with the Osteopathic Center’s precise touch!

The world of medical science unveils new discoveries quite frequently, and much of the focus of media attention is upon the latest bells and whistles. Amid all the new promises, it’s easy to forget about the healing touch that patients really need for recovery. The Osteopathic Center hasn’t forgotten this concept. The idea that your body can heal itself is nothing new. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) incorporates natural pain relief into traditional medical care for a complete patient-centered approach to healing and empowers each patient to access their most optimal health.

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine was created by Andrew Taylor Still, MD, DO, in the late 1800s, and it has successfully developed into its own unique treatment method for any medical condition. Osteopathic manipulation can help people of all ages and backgrounds with its hands-on approach. It has multiple benefits, which include easing pain, promoting healing, and increasing mobility. Beyond just treating muscle pain, OMM can also help with:

  • Acute sinusitis and chronic congestion
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Arthritis and muscle atrophy

Manipulation techniques offered

OMM restores balance to the whole body. Oftentimes, one of our practitioners will work on many areas of the body to facilitate the most effective healing. As a patient receiving this treatment, you may be a passive or active participant in the process depending on the particular condition treated. The provider may ask you to contract muscles or use breathing techniques or patterns. There are no quick or aggressive movements performed at our Center. Techniques performed at the Osteopathic Center allow the body to unwind and will progress for up to three days after treatment.

There are numerous manipulation techniques we use alone or in combination on our patients. The most common forms of manipulation use at the Osteopathic Center are:

  • Craniosacral therapy
  • Neurofascial release (NFR)
  • Counterstrain (CS)
  • Still Technique
  • Facilitated positional release (FPR)
  • Muscle energy (ME)
  • Myofascial release (MFR)
  • Articulatory
  • Facilitated positional release
  • Facial technique / facial treatment
